Safety Protocols

At Dolphin King Beach Equipment Rentals, safety is a priority with every beach rental and setup we provide.

Florida Gulf Coast conditions can change quickly. Wind, thunderstorms, lightning, and afternoon weather can develop even when the day begins calm and sunny. For that reason, we use different anchoring procedures and operating policies depending on the type and size of shade equipment being rented.

Dolphin King offers three primary types of beach shade:

• Beach umbrellas
• 6' x 6' beach cabanas
• 10' x 10' commercial pop-up canopy tents

Beach Umbrellas

Our beach umbrellas are a convenient shade option for individuals, couples, and smaller groups.

Each umbrella is secured properly using a 12-inch sand screw anchor installed deeply into the beach sand. This provides significantly more stability than simply pushing an umbrella pole into loose sand.

Customers are responsible for properly installing the provided anchor, securing the umbrella, and monitoring it throughout the rental period.

Umbrella Safety

Even when properly anchored, an open beach umbrella can catch a significant amount of wind.

If sustained winds reach or exceed approximately 15 mph, winds begin gusting strongly, or weather conditions appear unsafe, collapse and secure the umbrella immediately.

Umbrellas should also be collapsed when thunderstorms or rapidly changing weather approach.

Never leave an open umbrella unattended during windy or changing conditions.

Beach Cabanas

Our 6' x 6' cabanas provide more shade while maintaining a relatively lightweight and portable design.

Every cabana rental is provided with a 12-inch sand screw anchor and four attached sandbag supports. This anchoring system should always be used.

The sand screw should be installed deeply into the beach sand, and all four sandbags should be properly filled and positioned around the cabana. Together, these anchoring methods help stabilize the cabana and distribute the forces created when wind moves across the fabric.

Customers are responsible for properly installing the sand screw and filling and positioning all four sandbags before using the cabana.

Cabana Safety

Although the sand screw and four sandbags provide additional stability, a cabana still has a large fabric surface capable of catching wind.

If sustained winds reach or exceed approximately 15 mph, strong gusts develop, or weather conditions begin deteriorating:

• Collapse the cabana.
• Keep the sandbags secured.
• Pull the collapsed cabana and supports together until conditions improve.

Customers should never rely on the sandbags or anchor alone during strong winds, thunderstorms, or rapidly changing weather.

10' x 10' Commercial Canopy Tents

Our 10' x 10' canopy tents provide approximately 100 square feet of shade and are designed for larger groups and beach setups.

Because a 10' x 10' canopy has a much larger roof area than an umbrella or cabana, it can experience substantially greater wind forces.

We use commercial-grade steel-frame 10' x 10' canopies with reinforced hexagonal legs designed to withstand repeated commercial use better than lightweight recreational canopies.

Professional Canopy Anchoring

Properly securing a 10' x 10' canopy tent means:

• Heavy sandbags are securely attached to each canopy leg.
• The sandbags and lower portions of the legs are buried deeply in the beach sand.
• The surrounding sand is packed and compacted around the anchoring points.
• The canopy is positioned and adjusted to reduce unnecessary wind exposure.

Burying the ballast provides additional resistance beyond simply placing sandbags on top of the beach.

However, no ballast system makes a pop-up canopy windproof.

10' x 10' Canopy Wind Policy

Because of the large surface area of a 10' x 10' canopy roof, Dolphin King uses a conservative approach to wind.

If sustained winds are expected to reach approximately 15 mph or greater, significant gusts are forecast, or local conditions appear unsafe, Dolphin King may:

• Delay the setup.
• Cancel the setup.
• Lower the canopy.
• Break the canopy down early.

Weather decisions are based on both forecasts and actual beach conditions.

A forecast below 15 mph does not automatically mean conditions are safe. Strong gusts, thunderstorms, changing wind direction, or other conditions may require earlier breakdown.

If Wind Increases After Setup

Customers should continue monitoring conditions during their rental.

If sustained winds reach or exceed approximately 15 mph, or the canopy begins moving noticeably in strong gusts, the customer should lower the canopy to its lowest available height setting as soon as it is safe to do so.

Lowering the canopy reduces its overall profile and helps reduce exposure to the wind.

After lowering the canopy:

• Discontinue normal use until conditions improve.
• Keep the canopy anchored and do not remove the buried sandbags.
• Do not attempt to relocate or independently break down the canopy.
• Contact Dolphin King if conditions continue to worsen or assistance is needed.

If weather becomes severe, customers should leave the beach and seek appropriate shelter rather than remaining with the equipment.

Safety always takes priority over completing or continuing a setup.

Safe Canopy Breakdown Procedures

Canopies can be particularly vulnerable during setup and breakdown because the roof may still be exposed to wind while anchoring is being removed.

Whenever practical, the canopy should be lowered and partially collapsed while the anchoring system is still secured. Ballast should only be removed as the structure is being safely collapsed.

This reduces the amount of time the canopy roof is exposed to wind without adequate anchoring.

Florida Beach Weather Can Change Quickly

Florida weather can change with very little notice.

Even on a beautiful morning, the beach can experience:

• Sudden wind gusts
• Sea-breeze changes
• Pop-up thunderstorms
• Lightning
• Heavy rain
• Rapidly changing coastal conditions

Customers should continue monitoring both the weather and rental equipment throughout their beach day.

If Winds Increase

If sustained winds approach or exceed approximately 15 mph, strong gusts begin, or conditions otherwise appear unsafe:

• Beach umbrellas: Collapse and secure the umbrella.
• Beach cabanas: Collapse and secure the cabana while keeping the sandbag supports together.
• 10' x 10' canopy tents: Lower the canopy to its lowest available height setting, discontinue normal use, and contact Dolphin King if conditions continue to worsen.

Never assume that an anchor, buried sandbag, or heavy-duty frame makes shade equipment safe in all wind conditions.

Thunderstorm & Lightning Safety

Beach shade equipment does not provide protection from lightning.

Umbrellas, cabanas, and canopy tents should never be used as shelters during thunderstorms.

If thunder is heard or lightning is observed:

• Leave the water.
• Leave the beach setup.
• Seek shelter inside a substantial building or enclosed vehicle.
• Do not remain beneath an umbrella, cabana, or canopy tent.

Equipment can be replaced. Personal safety always comes first.

General Beach Equipment Safety

In addition to shade equipment, Dolphin King rents beach chairs, floats, boogie boards, beach toys, coolers, tables, blankets, wagons, games, baby equipment, and other accessories.

Many of these products are lightweight enough to move or become airborne when winds increase.

Customers should take reasonable precautions whenever weather begins changing.

When Winds Increase

Customers should:

• Lay beach chairs flat on the sand rather than leaving them upright.
• Secure floats and boogie boards when they are not being used.
• Bring lightweight toys, towels, and accessories together in a protected location.
• Keep cooler lids closed.
• Lay lightweight folding tables flat if conditions become windy.
• Secure or store anything capable of blowing away.
• Never leave loose equipment unattended during deteriorating weather.

Even relatively small objects can become hazards when caught by a strong gust.

Float & Water Equipment Safety

Inflatable floats, boogie boards, and other water equipment should always be supervised while being used.

Wind and currents can quickly move lightweight equipment away from shore.

Children should always be actively supervised around the water.

Inflatable toys, swim tubes, and similar recreational products are not substitutes for properly fitted life jackets or approved flotation equipment.

Keeping the Beach Safe for Everyone

Our safety procedures are intended to protect not only our rental equipment, but also our customers and everyone sharing the beach.

Customers should always use good judgment and pay attention to changing conditions.

If the weather begins deteriorating, the safest approach is to:

• Secure loose items.
• Lay lightweight equipment flat.
• Collapse umbrellas and cabanas.
• Lower 10' x 10' canopies to their lowest available height when wind conditions require it.
• Discontinue use of equipment when conditions become unsafe.
• Leave the beach during thunderstorms or lightning.

Our Commitment to Safe Beach Rentals

Conditions must continue to be monitored throughout the rental period, and equipment should be adjusted, secured, lowered, collapsed, or removed whenever conditions warrant it.

Customers are expected to use all provided anchoring equipment and follow all safety procedures.
